Vegan Fall Seasonal Detox & Cleanse Meal – Red Lentils, Rice & Spiced Okra


This fall meal brings together 3 gentle yet powerful foods.
At home this meal would be called “Daal, Chawal, Bhindi” [Lentils, rice and okra] and would always serve to make our mouths water.

Basmati rice – Inherently sweet, gentle, light and wholesome. It is tridoshic (suits almost everyone) and easy to digest. It is further cooked with some aromatic spices like bay leaves, cardamom pods and cinnamon to reduce Vata.

Red lentils or मसूर Masoor  – These are split beans or legumes and their effect on our digestion is light and soft. They are well spiced [not spicy] with the addition of turmeric, cumin, neem leaves & seasoning like salt and lemon juice to bring the meal together with sour, bitter and salty tastes.

Okra or भिँङी Bhindi – Is a tridoshic vegetable, it has a sweet and astringent taste and is once again universally tolerated well and even loved.

Fall is windy, dry, light & cool and is Vata season. As we move gradually move from summer to fall, dietarily, this is a wonderful time for purification so we can get ready for the coming winter.
This is a time when Vata ailments like aches and pains of the joints and muscles are experienced & emotionally, we may become fearful and lonely.
The best foods to be eaten now are warm, moist and well lubricated, with a slight emphasis on sweet, salty and sour foods.

Please note: Only dry beans/ legumes, which are soaked overnight and rinsed throughly to remove any gas producing qualities are used, making them easy to digest.
Ayurveda says that our lunch and dinner should be planned in such a way that all 6 tastes are incorporated. We are very vigilant to ensure that all our meals achieve the same balance.
